EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
