Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
