This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like typical biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
